Why Missing Treasures Fascinate Me.
Why do I love writing about missing treasures and unsolved mysteries?
For me, it’s not just about gold, jewels, or lost relics. It’s about the thrill of the chase — the unanswered questions that pull you in and refuse to let go. Hidden clues, half-forgotten history, and puzzles waiting to be solved… that’s the fuel that fires my imagination.
⚽️ From P.E. to Plot Twists
Here’s the funny part: as a kid, I didn’t even like writing.
My life revolved around football, football, and — well — more football. I’ll never forget an end-of-year report that read:
“If Master Salmon put as much energy into his writing as he does into P.E., he would pass his GCSEs with ease.”
Safe to say, back then, I wasn’t exactly destined to be an author.
But something shifted. I became fascinated by the “What happened?” and “Where is it now?” type of questions. Instead of feeling like homework, writing became a way to chase down answers and imagine possibilities.
📖 The Book That Hooked Me
The author who truly pulled me into this world? Clive Cussler.
The first book I picked up was The Eye of Heaven from the Fargo Adventures series. I can still picture it: lying outside my canvas tent in the sun, absolutely glued to the page.
Was it a literary classic? No.
Did I love every second of it? Absolutely.
That one book turned into a whole stack — book one, then two, then three… and then into more Cussler novels, and eventually, thrillers by authors like Steve Berry, who blends historical fact with fast-paced fiction.
💎 The Allure of the Treasure
What links all these stories together — and mine too — is the treasure itself. The mystery. The puzzle.
Sure, sometimes the treasure gets found. Sometimes there’s a neat, happy ending. But that’s not really the point. For me, it’s about whether a story can transport you into the chase — whether it can keep you hooked, tugging on your curiosity right up until the last page.
That’s the magic. And it’s exactly what I try to capture in my own writing.
